1870's Baseball Albumen Photograph. Extraordinary image takes us back to the early adolescence of our national pastime in thrilling fashion. While baseball photography from the early aftermath of the Civil War appears on the hobby's auction block with some limited degree of regularity, the 9.75x7.75" dimensions of the offered specimen set this specimen apart from the rest. The image was originally discovered in New England and almost certainly derives from there as well. Note the word "Chester" on the belt of the man second from left--there are towns by that name in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut. The albumen photo is affixed to a cardboard mount that has been trimmed to the edge of the image. Otherwise, the piece exhibits only minor handling and storage wear.
