1870 Baseball in Germany Cabinet Card Collection. Fascinating assemblage of images holds the rather noteworthy distinction as being quite possibly the oldest baseball photography deriving from outside the borders of the United States. All come from the estate of Clarence Lexow, a member of the Lincoln team who went on to prominence as a New York state senator best remembered for cleaning up Tammany Hall and appointing Teddy Roosevelt as head of the New York City police commission. Efforts at researching the particulars that would explain why an American baseball team was in Germany in 1870 have come up empty, but it remains an intriguing project for the enterprising early baseball historian. Most noteworthy in the collection is the largest of the images, a 4.25x6.5" cabinet card featuring a marvelous sepia image of the uniformed Lincoln Base Ball Club posing with the tools of the trade. Vintage handwriting on verso identifies the scene as "Bonn, June 25/70," and goes on to identify the players pictured. The Bonn, Germany photographer's studio stamping is found on verso as well. The image is slabbed in an SGC holder. Joining this large image, and likewise slabbed by SGC, are nineteen individual portrait cabinet cards (2.25x4") of the players in the group shot, identified in pencil on verso. The images derive from the same photographic studio, and remain in the same splendid NRMT condition that characterizes the team shot. Guide Value or Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500.
