Yankee Stadium Figural Baseball Flag Pole Topper Removed During 1970's Renovations. Only Mickey Mantle could hit a ball as high as this one flew, perched atop a Yankee Stadium flagpole that towered over decades of World Championship history. It derives from the personal collection of Tom Morgan, who rookied with the Mick as a member of the 1951 Yankees, and found himself the beneficiary of this special relic that came down with the mid-1970's renovations of the House that Ruth Built. While stadium seats and other archeological bits of the old Stadium appear with some regularity in hobby circles, we've been able to locate no other examples of this compelling specimen in auction archives.

The painted metal ball exhibits the signs of years of exposure to the elements but presents remarkably well, measuring approximately seven inches in diameter (about the size of a large canteloupe), with a thick bolt at bottom for connection to the flag pole. Did the stadium turn toward this relic every time the National Anthem played, or was it the ever-present American League pennant that flew just below? We can't be certain. But we know this for sure--it's one of our favorite Yankee Stadium pieces we've ever handled. Letter of provenance from Tom Morgan.
