Description

Vast Collection of Personal Speeches, Notes, Etc. from the Casey Stengel Collection. Any attempt to describe this lot in the body of a paragraph of catalog copy will fall well short of the goal, as there is no possible way to convey the vast and varied nature of the collection. There is easily over one hundred individual pieces of paper, ranging from index card to legal pad size, with thousands and thousands of handwritten words written over a course of decades. The subject matter is almost exclusively baseball, and much of it appears to be notes for speeches for everything from dinner banquets to clubhouse pep talks. Just about every Hall of Famer Stengel ever met is mentioned with cryptic references: "Hack Wilson Life Buoy sign, Wilbert Robinson grapefruit..." Occasionally Casey signs his name, but more often does not. A list he made reads, "1) Physical condition. 2) Eating & sleeping. 3) Hustle. 4) Control of temper. 5) Obligation to baseball. 6) Your manager. 7) Your organization." A scouting report on his Yankees includes notes like, "Blanchard, Berra, Howard C, O.K. except speed," and "Boyer SS good on throwing, double play great, question hitting distance." Understand that calling this the tip of the iceberg would be a tremendous understatement. It would take hours upon hours just to read this monumental archive, and weeks and months to decipher the details. Breakdown value is simply tremendous, though it seems a shame to scatter this archive to the winds. Our greatest hope would be that a baseball historian or biographer would come to claim this unique find and share this intriguing look into the mind of Charles Dillon Stengel with the world.
