Description

Late 1950's Game Worn Baltimore Orioles Cap with Protective Insert from The Brooks Robinson Collection. Robinson wasn't simply one of the most gifted players of his era, he was one of the most intelligent as well. Batting helmets would become the standard for the Major Leagues in the 1960's, but when the young third baseman was just getting started, batters wore the same headgear that they wore in the field. So Robinson constructed a special insert from hard plastic and compressed foam, acquired a slightly larger Orioles cap to provide enough room for it, and took to the batter's box with his noggin protected.

It appears he wore the creation for several years as the "Tim McAuliffe" brand cap is utterly infused with game wear, most noticeable in the white staining where the visor meets the crown, the result of the salt in Robinson's sweat. Certainly one of the most "personal" game worn items to derive from Robinson's long and glorious career. Letter of provenance from Brooks Robinson.
