Description

Considered one of the most versatile athletes of modern sports, he won Olympic gold medals for the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon , played football (collegiate and professional), and also played professional baseball and basketball. He lost his Olympic titles after it was found he was paid for playing two seasons of semi-professional baseball before competing in the Olympics, thus violating the amateurism rules. The 24"x 30" painting shows Thorpe standing to the right side of the canvas with his 2 lost medals from the Olympics, Thorpe in later years took job digging ditches, and was also an alcoholic. A large bottle of alcohol, a shovel and a ditch are also shown in the painting. Artist Grant Smith has signed the front and back of the original oil painting.
