Early 1960's Mickey Mantle Game Used Knee Wrap. When Mickey Mantle stepped on a sprinkler head in Game Two of the 1951 World Series, the resultant knee injury threatened what would prove to be one of the greatest careers in Major League history. But the gritty Oklahoman endured, dragging his increasingly damaged frame through seventeen more seasons of Hall of Fame brilliance. Presented is a bandage that served as part of Mantle's standard pre-game routine to stabilize his compromised joint. The word "Mick" is written in vintage black marker just below the maker's mark which reads, "coNco, Elasticfoam, Cotton Plastic, Foam Rubber."

An included 2000 letter of provenance attests that the bandage derived from the personal collection of Herb Elk, official scorer for the New York Mirror and thus a regular denizen of the Yankees clubhouse. Elk was an avid collector until his passing in the 1980's, at which time the bandage was acquired by the author of the letter. Letter of provenance from early owner. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
