Description
Early 1930's Waterman's Autograph Album with Philadelphia Athletics Team Signed Sheet, Bobby Jones Autograph. Most of us in the autograph collecting world have encountered a Waterman album before, issued to children with the instruction to contact famous people through the mail in order to request autographs. The process was presumably encouraged in order to teach children the skill of written correspondence, and to aspire to great achievements as an adult like the men whose autographs they collected. Here we encounter an album compiled by one of the more enterprising young lads, containing over eighty autographs from a wide range of human endeavor. Most interesting to our sports collectibles clientele will be a team signed sheet of the 1932 Philadelphia Athletics, bearing bold black fountain pen autographs from the likes of Mack, Grove, Cochrane, Collins, Foxx, Simmons and more. Three signatures are minimally smudged, only Simmons from the above list. A flawless Bobby Jones signature appears a couple pages later. Other notables: Joe McCarthy, Bill Tilden, Zane Grey, Gar Wood, Sgt. Alvin York, Will Rogers, several state Governors including a great F.D.R. autograph, a card from Thomas Edison's laboratory advising the inventor is too ill to comply. Various track athletes, scientists, mayors and university presidents likewise appear. Most autographs are glued into the pages, others are signed directly in the book, and a few scattered signatures are loose. All signatures are as bold as the date of application. A really great little volume with considerable "break down value" should the winning bidder wish to follow that route. JSA has deemed the FDR, Cochrane and Simmons as secretarial.
