Description

Circa 1955 Willie Mays Game Used Fielder's Glove, PSA/DNA Authentic. Soon after recording the most famous defensive play in the history of Major League Baseball, a World Series Game One feat of athleticism so brilliant that it is remembered simply as "The Catch," the Hall of Fame center fielder for the New York Giants took to the massive acreage of the Polo Grounds center field donning this MacGregor G101. Its deeply-toned top grade cowhide leather demonstrates monumental game use suggesting years of play. The experts at PSA/DNA identify the labeling period as 1955, so it's most likely that the glove first saw action as the reigning World Series Champion and National League MVP continued to make his case as the ultimate "five-tool" ballplayer that year.

Some of the original lacing of the glove has been replaced, and other portions are simply missing, indicating that the the historic defensive tool was utilized until it could simply go on no further. The number "24" applied in marker to external pocket has faded to a dim but still easily visible shadow over the hundreds of hours on Mays hands and many decades since its retirement, while some further black marker writing inside the stitching path where the "MacGregor" label once lived has been diminished beyond legibility.

The PSA/DNA letter includes an image of a photograph of Mays wearing the identical model glove with a nearly identical number "24" application on exterior pocket, that photo having been used by Auravision for their popular set of sixteen picture records released in 1964. You'll note that the "NY" on Mays' cap was updated to "SF" for that record while the pose and background remain identical. There is likely no other surviving game used Willie Mays artifact that could hold a candle to this one for volume of wear. LOA from PSA/DNA, Authentic.
