Circa 1950 "Shoeless Joe" Jackson Signed Page, PSA/DNA
Authentic. We've all heard the famous, apocryphal tale of Ty
Cobb entering Joe Jackson's liquor store in Greenville and Cobb
asking his former opponent if he really didn't recognize him,
garnering the response, "I didn't think anybody wanted to remember
me." Presented is a page (5x3") torn from a small notepad that
baseball's brilliant exile used for calculations at that store. The
experts at PSA/DNA assure us that all writing appears to be in
Jackson's hand but for the name "John Fletcher" inked at the very
top. Most eyes will be drawn to the word "Joe," which exists as one
of only a scant handful of autograph examples preventing its
extinction.Even the most casual collector of sports memorabilia is aware that Jackson's autograph stands as one of the hobby's "Holy Grails," the vast gulf between supply and demand fueled by the legendary slugger's illiteracy and his supreme baseball relevance respectively. Typically Jackson would avoid signing autographs whenever possible, allowing his wife to tend to those duties when possible, and only assuming them himself when legal matters demanded. We can't be sure if this was an attempt by Jackson to practice his signature or if it was written for some other reason, but its consistency with the few known authentic examples is undeniable. A pair of items in our archives featuring Jackson's signature have sold for more than $170,000, making this "first name" offering a rare opportunity to own a "dream" autograph at a more attainable price point.
