    Description

Circa 1940 Yankee Stadium Flag: St. Louis Browns. The long-suffering Browns suffered little here, the flag holding together better than any of its siblings. The brown-on-orange coloring makes for an attractive specimen too.

1930's Yankee Stadium Team Pennant Race Flags

This collection of eight flags representing each of the American League cities is purported to have flown at Yankee Stadium during the pre-war era, likely during the times of Gehrig and DiMaggio. Each flag is manufactured by "Annin" company and its subsidiary "Defiance," as per labels affixed to the grommeted headings. Annin is arguably the most esteemed flag maker in the country, having manufactured the flag that draped Abraham Lincoln's coffin and the one Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin planted on the surface of Moon.

Each flag measures approximately eight feet in length, crafted from heavy cotton twill and exhibiting the heavy wear one would expect from multiple seasons of exposure to the elements. These flags would have been hoisted above the infield grandstands to indicate the day-to-day order of the pennant race. They come to us from a specialist in military collectibles who discovered the flags packed together in a box while engaged in his hobby.

Stadium flags such as these would never have borne physical attribution to their home ballparks, but strong evidence exists to establish The House that Ruth Built as the genesis with a high degree of probability. Beyond the fact that the Annin company headquarters has been based in Roseland, New Jersey for six generations (a town just twenty miles from New York City), and ballpoint ink handwritten "Yankee Stadium" notations appear on each flag heading from an earlier owner, the New York flag is the only example to add a third color to its design--an eye-catching red joining the appropriate navy and white.
