Description

Circa 1940 James Raleigh "Biz" Mackey Signed Album Page, PSA/DNA Authentic. The 2006 posthumous Hall of Fame inductee took a fifteen-year old kid named Roy Campanella under his wing in the late 1930's, with Campy later recalling, "In my opinion, Biz Mackey was the master of defense of all catchers. When I was a kid in Philadelphia, I saw both Mackey and Mickey Cochrane in their primes, but for real catching skills, I don't think Cochrane was the master of defense that Mackey was." The following statement, however, is not a matter of opinion, but bona fide fact--the autograph of Biz Mackey is one of the rarest in Cooperstown. This is the first example Heritage has ever handled, and our database of all major auction house results over the past dozen years likewise comes up empty.

A yellow album page measuring 3x5" in size bears a 3/10 pencil "Mack, Catcher," in a childlike scrawl from the man who beat out Josh Gibson for catcher in the first East-West All-Star Game in 1933. Don't even think about complaining about the "partial" signature, or the pencil utilized. This guy makes Shoeless Joe Jackson seem common. This first opportunity will almost certainly likewise be your last. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Authentic.
