    Description

Circa 1930 Lou Gehrig Speech with Handwritten Notations from The Lou Gehrig Collection.

UPDATE: This lot includes a letter of provenance from the consignor.

Gehrig's heartwrenching "Luckiest Man" farewell speech stands as one of the most recognized and celebrated orations ever delivered on American soil, joining Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and JFK's "Ask not what your country can do for you" words at his 1961 inauguration. While this six-page typed and hand-notated text for a speech delivered as a master of ceremonies for a New York City bicycle race doesn't quite measure up to those classics in terms of emotion or notoriety, any relic relating to a Gehrig speech carries enormous collecting weight due to that unforgettable July 4, 1939 goodbye.

Perhaps most fascinating in these several hundred words of text is the revelation of a nickname for Babe Ruth we've never previously encountered, and Gehrig's personal assurance that "The Called Shot" was indeed valid. Spectacular content, to be sure.

The pages exhibit storage and handling wear, with some separation at the storage folds, but all remain complete and fully legible. Minor paper loss appears at the bottom of each page. Gehrig writes about thirty words in pencil on the front of two different pages, and about twenty in pencil and ink on the back of another, referencing Ruth and the World Series in his own hand. Letter of provenance from consignor.
