Description

Circa 1912 Joe Kelley Handwritten & Signed Letter Regarding the Acquisition of Joe Tinker, PSA/DNA Mint 9. Joe Kelley's all-around playing style and well-groomed appearance inspired the nicknames "Kingpin of the Orioles" and "Handsome Joe Kelley." At his peak he teamed with fellow Hall of Famers John McGraw, Willie Keeler and Hughie Jennings on the sensational Baltimore teams of the 1890's. In regard to Kelley's flawless skill set, McGraw once said, "Joe had no prominent weaknesses. He was fast on the bases, could hit the ball hard and was as graceful an outfielder as one would care to see."

More than a century after he played his last game and almost seventy-five years since his passing, Joe Kelley remains one of the most elusive and coveted Hall of Fame autographs in the modern hobby. A coup for the advanced collector's trophy room, the lot on offer here provides a Joe Kelley handwritten and signed letter, which also references Hall of Famer Joe Tinker.

Short, sweet and to the point, Kelley writes: "Just a line to sat that think I would be able to help you if can't pull off the Tinker deal. Sincerely, Joe Kelley. Strictly Confidential." Most likely in reference to the deal that sent Hall of Fame shortstop Joe Tinker from the Chicago Cubs to the Cincinnati Reds, for which Kelley had played. The 5.25x4" plain white stationery has neat folds that are not really visible upon display, otherwise NRMT. The black fountain pen letter and signature are NRMT and the penmanship is spectacular and stylish. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, Mint 9.
