Description

Circa 1910 "Play Ball" Notebooks (2) and Notebook Cover (1)- Includes Cobb. From the John Esch collection. Among the most fantastically decorated of the baseball notebooks that were very popular around the turn of the last century, are these "Play Ball" notebooks that exhibit amazing colors and a strong design. This lot contains two intact notebooks, one of Christy Mathewson (misspelled "Matthewson") on the front and Walter Johnson on the back, and another book with the ill-fated Hal Chase on the front and Frank Chance on the reverse. The Mathewson/Johnson notebook is in very strong condition with sharp print quality and a strong binding. It does contain some handwriting within and on the cover. The Chase/Chance book does have a weakened spine and some creasing and some paper loss on the reverse. The notebook cover features Ty Cobb on the cover and Tris Speaker on the reverse. The colors and print are very strong, with some minor creasing and damage along the spine, although its pages are no longer present. A terrific collection of beautiful pieces which are over a century old.
