Circa 1890 Police Gazette Cabinet of John "Jocko" Fields. These cabinet cards were issued and distributed to promote sales of The Police Gazette periodical in the late 1880's and early 1890's. They consist of a sepia photograph affixed against a 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" thick-cardboard backing. The effect in their presentation, with a darker backing than is found on most of the era's cabinets, is marvelous. The offered card pictures John J. Fields, also known as Jocko Fields. A lifetime .271 hitter, Fields spent six seasons playing baseball from 1887 to 1892. His first three seasons were played with the Pittsburg Alleghenys in the National League. Police Gazettes are some of the most difficult of all 19th Century issues and are missing from most type card collectors want lists. The blank back is clean and this stellar example is in Near Mint condition.
