    Description

Circa 1883 "Waltham" Baseball Themed Pocket Watch. Cap Anson and King Kelly were the biggest names in the game when the original owner of this gorgeous 19th century rarity was checking the time to make sure he'd make it to the ballpark for the first pitch. Experts in the horological field will know that vintage baseball-themed watches are plagued by forgeries, but the experts in our resident Timepieces division have confirmed that this nearly pristine silverode 18-size screw-back beauty is the genuine article, the movement serial number 14,751,153 providing the approximate production date as listed in our lot title. Many experts consider this Waltham creation to be the most important timepiece ever created with a baseball theme, and today surviving examples can be counted on a single hand.

This is a highly coveted piece among horologists and sports collectors alike, and we expect to see significant bidding interest from both demographics. Waltham was the first company to mass-produce watches in America, and their work is still celebrated for its masterful craftsmanship.

The graphic O'Hara dial is the main attraction here, of course, with each of the hour markers featuring miniature portraits of ballplayers both posed and in action (the six o'clock position features a second hand instead). A quick wind of the crown sets the beating heart in motion, but we cannot attest to how well the watch keeps time. Certainly it could easily be serviced should faithful time-keeping be required. Diameter 2.25" (not inclusive of crown). Weight 160 grams. Fine condition with only the slightest hints of wear.
