Description

Christy Mathewson Original Painting. Mathewson played football and baseball for Bucknell University and was one of the first college-educated men to enter the major leagues. Throwing right-handed for the New York Giants (1900 - 16), he won more than 20 games in each of 13 seasons, and 30 or more in four of those years. He ranks third in all-time wins (373) and shutouts (80) and fourth in earned run average (2.13).In 1918, Mathewson enlisted in the U.S. Army for WWI. He served overseas as a Captain in the newly formed Chemical Service along with Ty Cobb. While in France, during a training exercise he was accidentally gassed and consequently developed tuberculosis. We offer an original oil painting depicting the ravages of war, showing Mathewson in military uniform, with a hollowed figure alongside him. The painting measures 24" x 30" and was created by Grant Smith.
