Description
2016 Alex Rodriguez Final Career Game Used & Signed Fielder's Glove with Rodriguez Letter. In the long history of our national pastime, perhaps only "Shoeless Joe" Jackson has experienced such soaring highs and crushing lows as the man this listing commemorates. A figure who unquestionably ranks among the greatest five-tool players ever to wear a Major League uniform, a quarter-billion dollar golden god, A-Rod would fall victim to the same blind ambition that had made him a mega-star, the greatest villain of the steroids scandal. But the number four man on the career home run totem pole would ultimately find the redemption that had always eluded the 1919 Black Sox, and the throngs at Yankee Stadium rose to their feet and roared their approval as Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who had used Rodriguez only in the designated hitter role for the entirety of the 2016 season, sent the forty-year-old veteran out to the hot corner one last time. Five days earlier, Rodriguez had called a press conference to tearfully announce that his baseball career was over, and, since then, Girardi had struggled to find the opportunity for a proper send-off.
It finally came on August 12, 2016, as closer Dellin Betances took to the mound to defend a ninth-inning three-run lead over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Alex Rodriguez jogged to the Yankee Stadium third base that had been his alone for nearly a decade for one last breath of a career that absolutely should--but may not--end in Cooperstown immortality. Betances proceeded to retire the first Rays batter, Mikie Mahtook, on strikes, and A-Rod was pulled for a utility infielder, returning to the dugout and a well-earned standing ovation.
We see this glove on Rodriguez' left hand as he embraces fellow aging legend Mark Texieira in the famous photograph capturing his departure from the career he'd begun at age eighteen. Later that evening, A-Rod would tell reporters of his final bow, "I've got to tell you, it's going to be tough to top that. That's a memory that I will own forever."
The personal model "Rawlings PRORV23" glove A-Rod wore at that final moment exhibits light use consistent with a season lacking a single fielding chance. A silver sharpie signature appears at interior, along with Rodriguez' personal notation reading, "My Last Glove, 8-12-16." Beyond the perfect photo match and Rodriguez' own attribution, both on the glove itself and an included letter of provenance, the important memento is certified by both Major League Baseball and Steiner Sports. Letter of provenance from Alex Rodriguez. MLB Authentic JB814013. Steiner SS167775. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph).
