A final-season relic from the greatest closer of all time

2013 Mariano Rivera Game Used Fielder's Glove. It's rare that pundits will come to a full consensus. Take any record in sports and you'll find that even then, the opinions regarding supremacy are not unanimous. Not everyone believes Pete Rose was the best hitter, or Brett Favre the best passer, or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar the best scorer. But the best closer in the history of baseball? It's not just a landslide, it's a shutout.

Rivera earned his throne with two singularly unique attributes. First, of course, was the most effective single pitch ever thrown, a buzz saw cutter that forced overtime hours at the Louisville Slugger factory. And the other, though not as often discussed, might be even more important: utter fearlessness. In a role requiring residence in only the tensest of moments, Mo was a rock. His own summation of his job sums up his zen-like approach: "I get the ball, I throw the ball, and then I take a shower."

The game lost something truly special with Rivera's 2013 retirement, but there's no question but that our loss is the gain of whatever endeavor he undertakes in the future. Even Yankee haters have to love the guy, and we expect a great deal of interest across all Major League allegiances when this rare glove hits the block.

Having announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2013 season before spring training had even begun, Rivera exhibited his characteristic generosity with the ordering of dozens of fielder's gloves which he intended to wear for a single game and then donate to worthy causes or individuals. This is one of those gloves. The soft black leather Nike Diamond Elite model is embroidered with "Mariano Rivera, Phil 4:13" at the thumb, the Bible verse referenced being, "I can do all things through him who gives me strength."

On the outside fingers, Rivera signs in 9/10 silver sharpie adding his jersey number and the words, "Game Used 2013 Season." Unfortunately the precise game details have been lost, but there's a strong chance that one of the final forty-four of his 652 saves appears on its resume. LOA from PSA/DNA (for glove's game use). Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
