    Exit Sandman.

2013 Home Plate Used During Mariano Rivera's Final Save at Yankee Stadium. The Yanks were still clinging to dimming hopes for a playoff berth in the first week of September as they cruised to a six to one advantage over the Chicago White Sox through seven at the Stadium, but after a shaky start to the eighth inning for C.C. Sabathia, David Robertson was brought in to throw cold water on the fire. But Robertson brought gasoline instead and was unable to escape the inning before allowing four runners to cross home plate to trim the Yankee lead to one.

    And so, Enter Sandman.

Seven pitches later the threat was ended, Rivera winning the battle with White Sox center fielder Alejandro De Aza. A perfect top of the ninth would tie a bow on a rare four-out save for the game's greatest closer, Paul Konerko lining out to third baseman Alex Rodriguez for the final out. It would be the last time that Frank Sinatra would sing "New York, New York" with Mo on the mound.

The save would bring the Panamanian ace's season save tally to forty-one, and expand his career record to 649, each number later expanded by three with two road saves in Baltimore, and the last at Toronto on September 18th.

A quick check of the serial number on the affixed Major League Baseball holographic authentication sticker designates this offering as "Field Home Plate Used 8/30/13 Thru 9/8/13," the final contest representing the last blown save of Rivera's first-ballot Hall of Fame career. But Mo properly focuses on the happier accomplishment with his notation on the dirt-stained relic:

"Mariano Rivera, My last save, 9/4/13, Exit Sandman."

Though the loss of an all-time great is a cause for sadness for millions of Yankee supporters, this is a relic that should be interpreted as a celebration of a peerless career, the closing bookend on an era that will never be repeated. Already a resident of Monument Park, with Cooperstown right around the corner, Rivera will see his star continue to rise as his absence makes our hearts grow even fonder. MLB Authentic EK800702.
