Autographed by Derek Jeter, David Price & Mariano Rivera2011 Yankee Stadium Pitching Rubber Used in Derek Jeter's 3,000th Hit Game. If it hadn't happened, if there wasn't actual video proof, who could have possibly believed it? We'd known for years that Derek Jeter would eventually gain admittance to the elite brotherhood of the 3,000 Hit Club, and his flair for the dramatic had been well established by The Flip, The Dive, and five World Championship rings, but still nothing could have prepared us for July 9, 2011, arguably the greatest performance of Derek Jeter's sixteen seasons in pinstripes. "If I would have tried to have written it and given it to someone, I wouldn't have even bought it," the Captain would later admit.
A packed Stadium was already coursing with energy when Jeter came to the plate in the bottom of the first, hopeful but far from assured of the opportunity to witness history, as the tally stood at 2,998. Needing two hits to join the game's immortals, the superstar shortstop exploded for the first five-hit performance in the new Yankee Stadium's history, his third inning hit to flip the odometer to 3,000 carrying into the left field seats to make Jeter just the second man (after Wade Boggs) to join The Club with a long ball. His fifth and final hit beat a drawn-in infield in the bottom of the eighth to plate what would prove to be the winning run in the Yanks' five to four victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Proudly presented here is the pitching rubber that stood at center stage of a Yankees game for the ages. It exhibits solid use and is autographed by three key figures from the contest. They sign as follows:
Derek Jeter, 3000th hit, 7-9-11
David Price, I gave up DJ's 3k
Mariano Rivera, I saved DJ 3k
It should be stressed that Jeter kept home plate as a souvenir, and with bases changed every three innings, this pitching rubber represents the only resident of the diamond available to the public that saw action for the game's entirety.
