    Description

2004 Ty Cobb Original Artwork by Grant Smith. If the eyes are the window to the soul, than this Ty Cobb portrait takes you into the viscera of the man himself. A complex and intense man, whose childhood can help explain his ferociousness. Ty was born just two decades after the end of the civil war in Georgia, and always took great pride in the values of the old south. Playing in Detroit created tension when many of his teammates were construed as opponents through proximity of the Mason- Dixon line. August of 1905 saw two monumental events take place that would shape his adult life. Ty's father was killed and never given the opportunity to see his son play, and his contract was purchased from the Augusta Tourists by the Tigers. The elder Cobb wanted Ty to use his mind and be a doctor or lawyer, never truly believing baseball an honorable profession. Ty once said " I was always trying to prove something to a ghost." These immensely important occurrences help us understand the sometimes misunderstood legend. This original oil painting from artist Grant Smith, is unframed with dimensions of 24" x 36" , the work was completed in 2004. Guide Value or Estimate: $1,000 - $4,000.
