Description

1999 Pedro Martinez "Player of the Year" Award. Named for long-serving New York Journal American sportswriter Sid Mercer, this coveted award is issued annually by the New York Chapter Baseball Writers Association of America to the player they consider to have been the top Major League performer. Surely it was through gritted teeth that this Big Apple brotherhood named Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez, a painful thorn in the side of the New York Yankees all season, as the winner. Here we offer that very award, featuring an engraved metal plaque affixed to a black wood backing that measures approximately 11x14" in size. Martinez would earn his second of three Cy Young Awards this season as well, capturing the American League Triple Crown for Pitching with twenty-three victories, a 2.07 ERA and 313 strikeouts. Perfect condition.
