Description

1997 Craig Biggio Branch Rickey Award Duplicate Statue. The Branch Rickey Award is presented annually by the Rotary Club of Denver to the Major League player, manager or executive who best exemplifies the Rotary International motto, "Service above self." In 1997, that award went to Houston Astros legend Craig Biggio, who then bid in a charity auction and won this fourteen-inch (14") replica of the twenty-inch (20") award and gifted it to a friend. Note that only one award and one duplicate are produced each year. The bronze statue is a masterful work of art is presumably based upon Rickey himself, who played four years of Major League ball between 1905 and 1914 and threw left-handed. The sculptor is George Lundeen, who likewise created a life-sized example of this figure that stands at Coors Field in Denver.
