Description1996 World Series Game Used Fielder's Glove That Recorded Final Out by Charlie Hayes. The perfect complement to the lot that precedes this one, as the meeting of the pair brought a joy to the Bronx that had been eighteen years in coming. The most famous photograph of the modern Yankee dynasty finds this glove at the center of the frame, smothering the last hope of the vanquished Atlanta Braves at the edge of a jubilant Yankee Stadium grandstand.
Hayes had been a late-season addition to the Yankee roster, part of an August 30th trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates with the intent of improving defense at a hot corner occupied by a legendary but aging Wade Boggs. With the Yanks guarding a two-run lead in the top of the seventh inning of Game Six, Hayes was brought in to replace the future Hall of Famer, putting him in the position to record one of the most famous outs in franchise history.
The Rawlings Gold Glove PRO-7BC is distinctively styled with a black pocket, making it instantly recognizable in game footage, and "Hayes" appears in vintage black marker at the wrist. Solid game use is evident, suggesting a full season (or more) of action. The back of the glove is signed and notated in Hayes' 10/10 black sharpie, reading, "Charlie Hayes, 1996 W.S. Game Used, Used This Glove To Catch Final Out."
Also included is a signed August 16, 2013 letter of provenance from Hayes that reads:
"I, Charlie Hayes, hereby verify and attest that this is the actual glove that I used as a member of the New York Yankees during the 1996 World Series, including the final out on 10/26/1996. This glove has been in my possession and sole control since that game. The glove has not been altered in any way and has been stored in a secure fashion to ensure no unauthorized access."
Hayes would go on to play 100 games for the 1997 Yankees before being dealt to the San Francisco Giants for the 1998 season, thus ending his participation in the last great Yankee dynasty. His immortality in Bronx history is nonetheless assured by that brief moment in foul ground that ended the longest World Championship drought since Babe Ruth authored the first in 1923. Letter of provenance from Charlie Hayes. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
