Cuba downs Japan in thrilling final!

1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics Gold Medal Presented to Member of Cuban Baseball Team. The United States had to settle for the Bronze as supremacy of our national pastime was determined on a global scale at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium during the summer of 1996, the second time the sport of baseball was included in the Olympic Games. The final contest of the eight-nation tournament found what are arguably the most fervent foreign adherents to the American game vying for the Gold--the baseball-mad nations of Cuba and Japan.

After scoring three runs in each of the first two innings to take a six-to-nothing early lead, Cuba appeared destined for a blow-out victory, but Japan would pull even in the top of the fifth. Then, just as quickly, Japanese hopes were dashed yet again with a four-run bottom of the Cuban sixth. Those runs would prove the game winners in the thirteen-to-nine final score, Cuba defending its global reign after taking the Gold at the Barcelona Games four years earlier.

Olympic medals issued to Cuban athletes tend to surface more often than those won by other nationalities, as the lure of a financial payout in that cash-strapped nations has often proved too attractive to resist. One American collector was able to acquire eight of the twenty-nine Olympic medals issued to Cuban athletes in 2000.

Certainly no Cuban medal carries more appeal than one related to baseball, and we find that word engraved at the bottom edge of this stunning showpiece. Presented is the gleaming symbol of amateur sport's highest achievement, one of 637 Gold Medals produced for Atlanta, crafted from gilt silver and weighing 180 grams. Diameter is seventy millimeters (70mm). Seated victory holds a laurel wreath on obverse in front of the Colosseum. Verso features the Atlanta Games emblem and reports, "Centennial Olympic Games." Original forest-green ribbon remains attached. Condition is effectively pristine.
