1994 Tony Gwynn Batting Championship Ring Presented to Padres Hitting Coach Merv Rettenmund. Celebrating the greatest season of the modern era's most prolific batsman, this ring was given by Tony Gwynn to his hitting coach Merv Rettenmund after the former hit a career high .394 to secure the fifth of his eight batting titles. In fact, Gwynn's .394 batting average in 1994 remains the highest batting average and closest any Major League player has come to hitting .400 since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941, seventy-five years ago. Gwynn would record four consecutive seasons of hitting over .350 and four consecutive batting crowns during Rettenmund's tenure as the Padres hitting coach.

Merv Rettenmund was part of three World Series champions, two as a player and one as a hitting coach. He once said that his job as a hitting coach was "fifty percent comedian, twenty-five percent psychologist, and twenty-five percent teacher." The fact that this ring was given from one Major League player to another makes it even more special.

This "Balfour 10k" gold ring is a size 13.5 with "Louisville Slugger Batting Champion" around seventeen diamonds on the top. Left shank displays National League logo over "1994." Right shank announces "Gwynn" and ".394" with crossed bats and baseball design. Weight thirty grams (30g.). Letter of provenance from Merv Rettenmund.
