Description
Kirk Gibson's dramatic Game One homer sets the course for destiny
1988 Los Angeles Dodgers World Series Championship Trophy (Large Format). In balloting sponsored by Major League Baseball, fans voted it the ninth most memorable moment in the sport's history, right between DiMaggio's fifty-six game hitting streak in 1941 and Nolan Ryan's sixth and final no-hitter a half century later. Hobbled by injuries to both legs in the NLCS, and fighting a stomach virus besides, Gibson's number was called to pinch hit against future Hall of Fame Oakland A's closer Dennis Eckersley, setting the stage for one of the most dramatic homers ever struck, a Game One-winning walk-off. Though this would prove to be Gibson's only appearance in the 1988 Fall Classic, his improbable blast and his fist-pumping limp around the bases remains the defining moment of 1980's baseball, along with Bill Buckner's decidedly less welcome contribution. Here we find the ultimate symbol of the former, a rare "jumbo" size World Championship trophy created to commemorate the Dodgers franchise's sixth and, to date, final trip to the sport's mountain top.
Its aesthetics should be familiar to any baseball fan, with a ring of pennants representing all Major League clubs encircling baseball and crown figurals. The press pins for each League Champion are stationed at the base, which is encircled by a golden engraved ring announcing, "World Series Champions, Los Angeles Dodgers, 1988." Further engraving on back states "Copyright 1983 Commissioner of Baseball." While the standard foot-tall models are created for every player and a healthy number of staffers and VIP's, the twenty-four inch tall format presented here are typically the exclusive domain of owners, managers and a select group of high profile figures and thus rarely are made available to the collecting community. Fine condition with no faults worthy of note.
