Description

1983 Hank Greenberg & Charlie Gehringer Jersey Retirement Ceremony Commemorative Bat, Wristwatch & Related Ephemera. Motor City treasure trove comes to us from the family of Billy Sullivan, Jr., who shared a dugout with this pair of Hall of Famers during the Tigers' pennant-winning season of 1940. Full-sized Hillerich & Bradsby is produced in the format of "black bats" issued for World Series contenders, with the facsimile signatures of the honorees imprinted in gold. An affixed brass plaque which reads, "Numbers 2 and 5 Retired, June 12, 1983, Detroit Tigers." Matching wristwatch is a gold-tone quartz Hamilton engraved on back, "Gehringer, Greenberg, 2 & 5, 6-12-83." Finally, we have Hamilton's official pass, gate ticket and instructions sheet for the ceremony, a 1983 Tigers Yearbook featuring the honorees on the cover, and a couple vintage snapshot photos of Greenberg. All pieces survive in fine condition.
