Description
1980 Attaché Case & Hall of Fame Ballots Presented to Willie McCovey from The Willie McCovey Collection. "I didn't always come through for you, but you knew I was always trying" Willie McCovey told a crowd of 20,547 during pre-game ceremonies in which his uniform number forty-four was officially retired as part of a special weekend at Candlestick Park to honor him on September 20-21, 1980.Mac called the final day of the weekend the "happiest day of my life," after he was showered with adulation and lavish gift which included a trip to Europe form Giants owner Bob Lurie, the keys to the city from San Francisco mayor Dianne Feinstein, and a gold ring with "44" in diamonds from his teammates.
Offered here is perhaps the most interesting and unique gift Willie received that day was presented to him by a group of Bay Area baseball writers. The brown, hard shell attaché case displays "W.L. Mc, 1959-80" embossed near the handle in gold. Inside, are twenty-three printed ballots which read "One Vote Hall of Fame 1985 Willie McCovey" and are signed by each of the writers along with the name of their media outlet. Best of all, the three-digit combination to open the locked case is "521," which is McCovey's lifetime Major League home run total.
This lot also includes a copy of a 1980 newspaper article, by Nick Peters, which mentions the attaché case and ballots. Note: That article lists the number of signed ballots as being twenty-five. Letter of provenance from Willie McCovey's widow.
