Description
1979 Rollie Fingers Sport Magazine "1974 World Series MVP" Commemorative Award. In 1979 Sport Magazine celebrated its twentieth anniversary as the sponsor of the World Series MVP Award by gifting twenty-five commemorative awards to each of the past recipients.On offer here is the award presented to Oakland A's ace reliever Rollie Fingers, the 1974 World Series MVP. From 1972-74, when the A's won three World Series titles and the automatic ninth-inning closer was not the fixture it would be in future decades, Fingers recorded sixty-one saves and a 2.34 ERA, while pitching between 111 and 126 innings per year, numbers unheard of today. In the World Series he was even better, saving six games and posting a 1.38 ERA.
Manufactured by Balfour, the award presented here was engineered with a fluorescent bulb (replaceable). Most prominent is the clear acrylic prism atop with a frosted baseball image which proclaims "World Series MVP 1955-1979." The prism is supported by a finished wooden base bearing a engraved plaque which reads : "Major League Baseball - Sport Magazine Honor 25 Years Of World Series Heroes. Rollie Fingers, Oakland A's - 1974." (Note: The prism has a small, inoffensive surface blemish).The award, which measures 13.5x8.25x10", was originally presented to fingers at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City on October 25, 1979.
