1978 National League Cy Young Award Presented to Gaylord Perry with Perry Provenance.

UPDATE: Please note that the original Gaylord Perry inscribed and signed artwork (which served as a letter of provenance) has been lost. This lot will be accompanied by a color copy of that inscribed and signed artwork, which reads: "To Rob, Hope you enjoy the Cy Young. Your friend, Gaylord Perry."

While any Cy Young Award carries enormous significance for recipients and collectors alike, this particular specimen carries unique historical relevance as the one that established Gaylord Perry as the first pitcher to be named the top hurler in each league. He'd first earned the distinction with an American League-leading twenty-four victories and twenty-nine complete games as a member of the 1972 Indians, recording a third of that team's victories during a season with little to cheer in Cleveland beyond Perry's mound mastery.

The season the offered trophy represents likewise saw Perry atop the victories rankings, but in the National League this time, with a glorious twenty-one and six record during his first season with the San Diego Padres. At age forty, Perry would be the oldest pitcher to claim the prize until a forty-two year old Roger Clemens displaced him in 2004. This season likewise stands in bold print in Perry's biography as he became the third pitcher in history to strike out 3,000 batters, joining a club containing only Walter Johnson and Bob Gibson on October 1, 1978.

We should state clearly that, while this award was owned by Perry and is accompanied by his letter of provenance, it is a later reissue and not the one he received in 1978. This practice of acquiring duplicate awards for public display, etc. is quite common in baseball and beyond, as veteran collectors are well aware. The award measures approximately 17x13" in size and exhibits only light handling and storage wear. Letter of provenance from Gaylord Perry (copy).
