1978 Keith Hernandez Gold Glove Award--His First of Eleven Straight! For eleven consecutive seasons, there was no greater presence at a National League first base than this man, a sure-handed southpaw who many count among the most worthy suitors for a Hall of Fame plaque. The two-time World Series Champion and five-time All-Star began his peerless streak of defensive dominance the season he was awarded this historic hardware, ending a four-year Steve Garvey run as the National League's top man at the three-spot.Hernandez would falter only ten times in over 1,500 chances in 1978, posting a .994 fielding average with ninety-six assists and 124 double plays. The next season he would sweep the Senior Circuit's top honors, claiming the Gold Glove, the batting championship and the Most Valuable Player Award.
The twenty-four-year old superstar smiles widely from beneath a St. Louis Cardinals cap at center of the display, flanked by golden baseballs as the eponymous Gold Glove--a proper first baseman's style--rises above him. Twin "Rawlings" logos frame the text below, which reads, "1978 Rawlings Gold Glove Award Presented to Keith Hernandez, Honoring His Selection to The Sporting News National League All Star Fielding Team."
