Description

1975-80 Willie McCovey Game Used First Baseman's Glove from The Willie McCovey Collection, PSA/DNA Authentic. In Mac's early years with the Giants, he played a lot of left field because he and future Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda were platooning at first base. McCovey did not enjoy playing the outfield because he felt like he was out of position. When Cepeda was dealt to the Cardinals in 1966, McCovey claimed first base for good and he enjoyed his most productive season's there. It was said that Mac's arms were so long that all the second baseman had to do was hand him the ball, hence the nickname "Stretch."

Here were offer Stretch's game worn first baseman's glove from the 1975-80 period. The Rawlings model CMH-75 pro model glove is wonderfully broken in and displays outstanding multi-season use in the pocket, web face and body.

In his LOA, leading baseball glove expert Dennis Esken of PSA/DNA noted that the glove is constructed out of Rawlings top grade tanned "Heart of the Hide" steer hide, features a "Deep Well Pocket," an extended palm double bar web, quad laced palm hinge, and fleece-lined wrist strap.

This lot also includes an 8x10" image of Mac wearing this model glove. For the style match, see Getty Images 1283727352. Letter of provenance from Willie McCovey's widow. LOA from PSA/DNA, Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
