Description
1974-75 Herb Washington Game Worn Oakland A's Helmet. Hurricane Herb Washington was the second and most famous of Charlie O's "designated runners." Washington played in 105 games during his Major League career but never had to take his place in the batter's box. Washington was only used on the base paths, where he swiped thirty-one bases and scored thirty-three runs. He won a World Series ring with the A's in 1974 and his 1975 Topps issue remains the only card to ever to list "Pinch Run." as a position. This "American Baseball Cap size 7" helmet was worn by Washington during his two-year stint in Oakland. "Herb 3" is Dymo labeled on the reverse and "3" is written on the underbill in vintage black marker. This exemplar exhibits tremendous multi-season use and crossed out player identifications on the inner crown pad, both of which suggests it was worn by others preceding his arrival. AP Images (741013095) shows him wearing a flapless helmet on the base paths in the 1974 World Series.
A world class sprinter, Washington was a four-time All-American at Michigan State where he won an NCAA title and broke the world record in the fifty-yard and sixty-yard dashes. After his sports career ended, he was a successful business man who served as the chairman of the Board of Directors of one of the branches of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and became the leading African-American owner of McDonald's franchises in the United States.
