1973 Al Kaline Game Used Outfielder's Glove from The Al Kaline Collection, PSA/DNA Authentic -- Mr. Tiger's Last Outfielder's Glove!"Al Kaline has again proved that rivals are not to take liberties with his remarkable arm without courting danger." -- The Detroit Times.
Defense was a hallmark of Al Kaline's elite skill set. From his lair in right field, he would cover tremendous swaths of outfield terrain, make leaping grabs at the wall, and gun down foolish baserunners, greedy for a extra base. Word quickly spread about the Baltimore bonus baby with the golden arm. Once, as a nineteen-year-old in 1954, Kaline nailed three Chicago White Sox baserunners, in three straight innings, trying for an extra base. That game was a precursor of things to come -- ten consecutive Gold Gloves and a reputation as a defensive genius. Oh, and Al could also hit a little, too.
Here we present the tool of Mr. Tiger's defensive trade. The 1973 Wilson model 1265 outfielder's glove displays a single web/double T-bar web, with substantial wear evident in the pocket, web face, and throughout the body. PSA/DNA glove expert Denny Eskin notes that "The finger sleeves are well scuffed and the rolled bottom edge of the wrist strap is torn. The leather in the palm and wrist strap has alligatored from perspiration." Most importantly is "Kaline" in green marker on the back of the thumb. Here is a rare chance to own a game used glove of a ten-time Gold Glove winner.
Note: Al Kaline loaned this glove, and other pieces in The Al Kaline Collection, to the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum, where it was on display from February 1980 until February 1981. A copy of the letter from Cooperstown, listing the items and the period of the loan, will be included with this lot and can be viewed in our online listing. Letter of provenance from Mark Kaline.
