Description

1972 Al Kaline Signed Detroit Tigers Player's Contract from The Al Kaline Collection - First $100k Tiger! Mr. Tiger was the hero of the 1972 season, virtually single-handedly chasing down the Red Sox with five hits and three runs in the final series to nip Boston and the wire and earn Detroit a postseason berth. He'd finish the season batting .313--his first finish north of three-for-ten since 1967--and earned a spot in the top twenty-five for American League MVP balloting.

As we can see, Kaline accepts the $100,000 he had refused a year earlier, and this contract represents the first six-figure covenant in franchise history. We see that the method of payment required an addendum, which Kaline and Tigers management initial on page one. The more specific terms of the addendum are taped to page five, and once again initialed by both parties. Then, at the bottom of page five, both Kaline and general manager James A. Campbell sign in full to solidify the deal, each appearing in 10/10 blue ink. It's a truly historic document, made all the more important by Kaline's noble refusal of the terms in the negated contract for 1971 that likewise appears within this auction. Letter of provenance from Mark Kaline. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
