The greatest season of one of the sport's greatest sluggers!

1969 National League Most Valuable Player Award Presented to Willie McCovey from The Willie McCovey Collection. He'd wear the orange and black for nineteen out of his twenty-two Major League seasons, but 1969 was unquestionably his finest, topping the Senior Circuit with career-bests in home runs (forty-five), RBI (126), on-base percentage (.453), slugging (.656) and intentional bases on balls (forty-five), while batting a career-high .320. McCovey joins Larry Doyle, Carl Hubbell, Willie Mays, Kevin Mitchell, Barry Bonds, Jeff Kent, and Buster Posey as the Giants' representatives who have claimed the league's highest honor.

Though Tom Seaver won twenty-five games and copped the N.L. Cy Young, while leading the Amazin's to the National League flag this year, The Franchise still finished second to Big Mac in N.L. Most Valuable Player balloting, tallying 243 first place votes to McCovey's 265, and directing the glorious hardware proudly presented here to the hero of The Bay. McCovey would earn eight top-twenty finishes in MVP voting during his Hall of Fame career, but this represents his sole victory, arguably the most significant relic from The Willie McCovey Collection.

The design will be familiar to any true baseball fan, a black wooden circle (16" diameter) affixed with an octagonal metal plaque announcing, "Kenesaw Mountain Landis Memorial Baseball Award." The eponymous Commissioner directs his stern gaze from the center, amidst further text reporting the terms:

"Most Valuable Player, National League, Willie McCovey, San Francisco Giants, 1969."

An emblem of the Baseball Writers Association of America is affixed at the six o'clock position. "Dieges & Clust" manufacturer's labeling appears on reverse. Only the slightest handling and storage wear is evident, leaving the historic relic to present without any distractions of note.

This lot also includes two different 8x10" photographs of McCovey holding this very award in 1969, while standing next to teammate Willie Mays, and an image of him with it circa 2014. Letter of provenance from Willie McCovey's widow.
