1967 Willie Mays Gold Glove Award from The Carl Kiesler
Collection.UPDATE: Note that this is a later edition of Mays' award, not the example presented in 1967. A spelling correction has been made.
Renowned for his effortless range, instinctive jumps, and precision throws, Mays captured a dozen consecutive Gold Gloves from 1957 to 1968-the award's first twelve years. His 1967 season, at age thirty-six, is a testament to his enduring defensive excellence. Despite battling injuries and showing signs of physical decline at the plate, Mays remained an elite center fielder, posting a .992 fielding percentage with just two errors in 243 chances. His ability to read the ball off the bat, combined with superior footwork and an uncanny sense of positioning, allowed him to continue patrolling the spacious outfield of Candlestick Park with authority. Mays' defensive prowess was not just reactive-it was anticipatory, strategic, and often game-changing, defining him as one of the most complete center fielders.
This is the penultimate edition of that unbroken run of awards identifying Mays as one of the finest outfielders in the National League, originally released to the collecting hobby by the widow of Mays' agent and business manager Carl Kiesler with her signed and notarized letter of provenance. The design of the award will be familiar to all collectors of Major League awards, with the eponymous gold glove set atop a plinth and framed by a pair of golden Rawlings baseballs. The plinth bears a photographic image of the Say Hey Kid above an engraved baseplate reading, "1967 Rawlings Gold Glove Award, Presented to Willie Mays, Honoring His Selection to The Sporting News National League All Star Fielding Team."
Condition is remarkably strong, with minimal evidence of handling and storage wear. Derives from the collection of Carl Kiesler, Willie Mays' personal attorney. Letter of provenance from Carl Kiesler's wife.
