Description

1967 American League Gold Glove Award from The Al Kaline Collection. Though Kaline's membership in the 3,000 Hit Club and 1955 batting championship tend to focus attention upon the offensive half of his Tigers service, any American League baserunner active during Kaline's career remembers his cannon of an arm best of all. He recorded eighty-four outfield assists between 1954 and 1958 (a career-high twenty-three in the last season of that span) before base coaches stopped sending runners, choosing discretion over valor. Kaline remains number fifteen in Major League history for wins above replacement as an outfielder.

This important piece commemorates the tenth of ten Gold Gloves claimed by Mr. Tiger. The design of the award suggests that this is a modern duplicate made for Kaline, a very common practice that we saw en masse when auctioning the outrageous supply of such awards from third baseman extraordinaire Brooks Robinson back in 2015.

The offered specimen features the eponymous gold glove atop a pedestal bearing a photographic image of the Detroit Tigers star. Twin golden baseballs frame the pedestal, with the base bearing an engraved plaque below that announces, "1967 Rawlings Gold Glove Award, Presented to Al Kaline, Honoring His Selection as The Finest in the Field!" The trophy exhibits minor handling wear with no significant visual distraction.

Note: Comes with an original 8x10" photograph of Kaline receiving his Gold Glove in 1967. Letter of provenance from Mark Kaline.
