Description
1967-68 Thurman Munson Game Worn Rookie-Era Catcher's Mitt, PSA/DNA Authentic. Perhaps it was the unimaginable heartbreak of Lou Gehrig's decline and death that left a vacancy in the Yankee captain's chair for thirty-seven years beginning with the Iron Horse's retirement in 1939. After all, who could measure up to that lofty standard for leadership and resolve that the durable first baseman had exhibited through sixteen seasons of unfailing service? Ultimately, it would prove to be the man who wore this glove, the key component to the Bronx Bombers' return to greatness after nearly two decades lost in the wilderness. Little could anyone have known, when the new captain was named in 1976, that he would soon break millions of pinstriped hearts just as his predecessor had done. The presented catcher's mitt dates to the period of Munson's transition from the collegiate game at Kent State to the beginning of his association with the Yankees franchise as a twenty-one-year old representing the Double-A Binghamton Triplets of the Eastern League farm system. Munson would lead that 1968 Triplets squad with thirty-seven RBI's in just seventy-one games of action, bringing him one step closer to the Bronx call that would make him the Rookie of the Year for the 1970 American League.
The subject Rawlings RL catcher's mitt exhibits outstanding game wear with heavy sweat staining and replacement of the pocket lacing necessitated by thousands of fastballs taking their toll. While photography of Munson from this era is all but non-existent, you'll find him wearing an identical model in his Yankees photos, with the handwritten black marker "Munson" on exterior pinky, clearly applied decades ago on this mitt, perfectly consistent with that Bronx imagery. A thrilling early relic from perhaps the most beloved player in Yankees franchise history lacking a Cooperstown plaque. LOA from PSA/DNA, Authentic.
