The first in a nine-season run of elite fielding hardware

1965 Bob Gibson Gold Glove Award. After the iron man performance of pitching two complete game 1964 World Series victories in just a three-day span, including the decisive Game Seven, the most dominant ace of his age returned the following season better than ever, recording his first twenty-win season in 1965. It was an indication of the exceptional athleticism that made Gibson the most feared fireballer of his generation.

Here we find another indication of that athleticism, the first of nine Gold Glove Awards issued to the Cardinals legend in recognition of his peerless ability to field his position on the mound. This was also effectively the first individual award in Gibson's trophy case, as his two Cy Youngs and single NL MVP Award would come in 1968-70. Gibson would retire twenty-seven and assist on thirty-three outs in 1965, committing just three errors for a .952 fielding average.

We stress that this is the original, period trophy, acquired directly from Gibson by a friend, who sold the award at auction in 2003. The design is considerably different than the modern format much more commonly encountered in the hobby. "Rawlings Gold Glove Award" is engraved on a golden diamond that rises from the base along with the eponymous gold glove and a golden baseball, which exhibits a degree of surface loss. Engraved below are the words, "P --Bob Gibson-- 19 The Sporting News 65, National League All-Star Fielding Team." Dimensions approximately 16x15x6.5".
