Description
1961 Ty Cobb Signed Letter. Three-page letter was penned on Emory University Hospital letterhead, the facility where the Hall of Fame legend would die in less than two months' time with a paper bag holding $1 million in negotiable bonds and a Luger pistol at his bedside. Cobb discusses his intentions to leave the hospital shortly for Cornelia, Georgia, where his funeral would soon be held, and looks forward to seeing his friend Rex, to whom the letter is written and the source of this and several other Cobb pieces within this auction. The letter was apparently dictated to Cobb's nurse and handwritten by her, but the "Ty Cobb" full signature at the close is the genuine article, as is the sickly man's brief postscript, "The help of the nurse is to save my nerves, Ty." All ink is 10/10, and the pages and mailing envelope are likewise free of flaws. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. When the great Tyrus R. Cobb passed away at Emory University Hospital after a long cancer battle at the age of seventy-four, Rex Teeslink and Cobb's nurse were the only two people at Cobb's bedside. Teeslink had developed a close friendship with the dying legend over the course of approximately two years that he served as Cobb's caretaker while attending medical school, and the Hall of Famer's affection for the young man is clear in the letters he sent and the artifacts he willed to him. Now approximately the same age that Cobb had been during their time together, Teeslink has released the following artifacts to the collecting public, some of the most unique and intriguing material from the legendary Georgia Peach ever to make their debut at public auction. Each lot will be accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Teeslink.
