Description

1961 Mickey Mantle Original Artwork by Willard Mullin. Perhaps the most famous of all sports cartoonists, Willard Mullin's work graces numerous sports pages as well as programs, magazine covers, and other mediums. Offered here may be the best example of his work ever made available, picturing none other than Mickey Mantle in his 1961 chase for sixty-one home runs. Measuring 15x20" and framed to 21x26," the image portrays "The Mick" in full swing above a sports editor desk. The wording reads, "Target for Mickey - Ruth's 60 Homers - Homer No.___ for Mantle - Now ___ Games Ahead of Ruth's Pace." A janitor points to the Mantle image and tells the sports editor, "See? You just fill in the right figures... and you can run this Monday, Wednesday and Saturday." A note is attached asking for the artwork to be "returned to Willard as soon as possible."
