One legendary New Yorker celebrates another

1961 Joe DiMaggio Original Artwork by LeRoy Neiman. Those veteran members of the Heritage clientele whose collecting interests span multiple genres are likely to remember an extraordinary portrait of famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart painted by Howard Chandler Christy, one of the leading illustration artists of the early twentieth century. Beyond the masterful portraiture, the offering drew enormous bidding interest for the photograph of Ms. Earhart posing beside the artwork in Chandler's studio, bringing a thrilling immediacy to the work.

Such is the case here, a masterful three-pose study of the Yankee Clipper that captures the Hall of Fame center fielder's batting preparations prior to the pitch. In an 8x10" photograph matted and framed directly below, DiMaggio mugs for the camera, holding with the artwork with the help of three friends.

But it's the remarkable skill of Neiman that should invigorate bidding the most, as the artist's deft touches leave no doubt of the subject, even if we were not provided the jersey number as a clue. Particularly in the third "frame," where the batter awaits the pitch, the DiMaggio attribution is clear, the weight shifted to the back foot, the perfect positioning of the right elbow.

Neiman signs the 13x17" gouache on paper at lower left: "Study of DiMaggio for 'The Clipper,' LeRoy Neiman '61." We can see in the photo with DiMaggio that a portion of this text was added subsequent to that shot. The work and photograph are professionally matted and framed to dimensions of 23x40".
