1960's-70's Yankee Stadium Dugout to Bullpen Telephone. An intriguing article in the October 24, 2011 edition of The New York Times traces the debut of the dugout to bullpen telephone line to 1930, when an article in The Sheboygan (WI) Press made reference to the technology in operation at Yankee Stadium. From the likely birthplace of that grand tradition comes the presented model, removed from the fabled Bronx ballpark during the mid-1970's renovations. The phone was gifted by the New York Yankees team president, Gabe Paul, to New York Times journalist Murray Schumach who wrote an article in October 1973 entitled, "$27-Million Face-Lifting of Yankee Stadium Starts" (photocopy included with lot). The phone has remained in the Schumach family until consigned to this auction.

The "Bell System Western Electric Model 554" relic has no dialing mechanism, since the phone was designed for a sole function as the "To Bullpen" handwritten text reports. Coding on reverse reports "11-61," suggesting that the date of manufacture fell between the World Championship seasons of 1961 and 1962.

Center dial is loose but remains in place. Sea-foam green paint, perfectly matching a shade found on old Yankee Stadium seats, appears on the front and sides, and the chrome handset arm is tarnished. But these battle scars only help tell the tale of hours spent in the dugout with Mickey, Whitey, Yogi and the boys.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
