1959 "Topps All Star Rookie" Trophy Presented to Willie McCovey from The Willie McCovey Collection -- As Seen On His 1960 Topps Rookie Card! Beginning in 1960, Topps presented players with actual trophies which mirrored the ones featured on their Topps All-Star Rookie cards. Only a handful have ever been offered for public sale and the "figural batsman on top hat" format (1960-72) was the most ornate and attractive. Starting in 1973, Topps went to the "bowl-on-base" design.Inscription plate reads: "Topps All Star Rookie. Young Americas Favorite. 1959. Willie McCovey, San Francisco Giants, First Base." Measures nine and a half (9.5") high and weighs 2.2 pounds. A wonderful crossover piece between cards and memorabilia.
Note: McCovey's personally owned Topps rookie card, which is imaged with his trophy, is strictly for reference and not included in this lot. Letter off provenance from Willie McCovey's widow.
