    Description

One of the most important tools of post-war Yankee dominance

1959-60 Yogi Berra Game Used Catcher's Mitt. Though the Mick may have been the brightest star of the 1950's Yankees, this squat little backstop was the planet that held the ballclub in its tight orbit. No Bronx Bomber in history is more decorated than the beloved Berra, earning two full fists of World Championship jewelry during his eighteen seasons as a player, as well as three American League MVP Awards. Every accounting of the team's all-time greats finds Berra installed prominently within the top ten, with some placing him alongside Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle in the upper half of that ranking.

The offered relic derives from a period that saw the Yanks in a state of flux at the catcher's position, with Berra training fellow Monument Park honoree Elston Howard to take over the starting role--vintage is determined by the glove's labeling format. Berra caught 116 games in 1959 and just sixty-three in 1960, the balance of his service coming in an outfield role that would find him staring up at Mazeroski's walk-off blast as it cleared the left field wall. Outstanding game use would suggest that this was Berra's primary mitt for his dwindling role behind the plate. A key Berra trait appears at the upper right edge of the wrist hole--at the lower left corner of the "Spalding" label--worn down by Berra's habit of poking his index finger outside the mitt while the other four fingers remained inside.

The "Spalding 1457" mitt is a format found in multiple images of Berra from the era, his personal signature model with a stamped facsimile autograph at the heel. The number "8" appears twice on verso in fading black vintage marker. Fleece of internal wrist strap is matted with sweaty wear, and interior leather is alligatored from use and drying.
