Description

Originally acquired from Mrs. Eddie Mathews!

1959-60 Eddie Mathews Game Used Fielder's Glove, PSA/DNA Authentic. Only Mike Schmidt has hit more home runs than this man among ballplayers defending the hot corner, and no third baseman prior to Mathews produced even half of his tally at the position. Certainly it was the lumber that led this faithful servant of the Braves franchise to bronze immortality at Cooperstown, but Mathews was a capable fielder whose career fielding average of .956 was a point better than Schmidt, a ten-time Gold Glover.

Presented is the first Mathews fielder's glove we have ever encountered, a Rawlings BD (Bob Dillinger) model acquired directly from Mathews' widow by a longtime Major League Baseball employee whose letter of provenance is included. Mathews' great fame as a slugger left few photographers interested in the other half of his game, but the experts at PSA/DNA were able to find Mathews in a 1957 photo (Getty Image #52698678) holding the same model, differing only in the way the wrist strap is affixed to the body.

Beyond the photographic documentation and the letter of provenance, a vintage number "41" written on the wrist strap links the leather to the 1978 Hall of Fame inductee. Game wear is substantial but all lacing is original and unbroken. LOA from PSA/DNA, Authentic. Letter of provenance from Major League Baseball employee.
